I won't give any definition from a dictionary or encyclopedia here. I'm sure you all know about abortion. What I think of abortion is that it should be legalized. Frankly I absolutely agree with its legalization.
I have my reasons, many of it and some of them are:
- if abortion is legalised it could improve the financial position of some couples. A child is really costly to rear, especially when he/she is not the only one.
- the legalization of abortion would also imply that it will be done in public health institutions namely hospitals. The women going through this will be taken care by professionals. I know many people always find critics to cast about hospitals employees. But if only you knew. Can you really afford to be nice and gentle people when you work in the most morbid place on earth, where you see death everyday, maybe every hour or even minute?
- I have a friend who is dead because she went for unsafe abortion. She was sixteen then. Young, beautiful, naive. I know it's all her fault that she got pregnant. But do we really opt for death as a punishment for her carelessness? Actually I think that if our society was more open to such issues she would never have had to do this without informing her mother. Or even if she did do it without informing her she would have gone to the hospital to have it done safely.
- In Mauritius there's an illegal market for abortion pills. Some women also practise it with unhygienic instruments obviously. They will just not have the means to afford good equipments! Then comes the private doctors who do it but then pretend not to know you. Some of them even make the husband/boyfriend sign that no judicial issues will occur if ever the woman dies.
Obviously some rules will have to be made if ever it is legalised. These rules will act as deterrents for youngsters who will want to indulge into sexual acts too quickly.
3 serious thoughts:
yes i agree with legalizing it too. hypocrites only do not. because everyone errs, and by this i am not saying that abortion can be used as an eraser to all unthought-of-sexual-intercourse, but it should be made legal for all the reasons you mentioned.

everyday abortion is practiced illegally, mais everyday!! and in unhygienic conditions too..ban fam mari risker zot lavie kan zot go for these backstreet abortion..y not make it legal? sa pou avoid ban fam trouv zot dans ban situations vraiment compliker.
i think there's a great deal to be done before legalising it. we should try to change the way people think. abortion nepli bizin ene tabou a moris.
and i also think ki the ultimate decision should be taken by the only one concerned, the pregnant woman/girl.

Legalizing abortion in Mauritius will cost a lot. And it is done everyday. Get the point? So we cant provide free abortion for everyone. For example we can provide abortion for cases when there is pregnancy after a rape.
What i mean is for a pregnant woman to have an abortion, she must have good reasons (financial unstability etc..). And if the$ reasons are not convincing enough and the woman doesnt want to keep her child, then she should have to pay for it.
Thats how i see it.
